CNS Biomarkers

Prof. Harald Murck, MD did his training in psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Max-Planck-Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany and currently holds an academic (unpaid) position at the Philipps-University Marburg, Germany (Apl. Professor for Psychiatry), where he leads a small research project and mentors’ medical students. He is closely involved in research of the mechanisms of CNS disorders, with a focus on psychiatric disorders, in particular the neurobiology of major depression. A key aspect of his activities focuses on personalized medicine approaches, utilizing a range of biomarkers for the characterization of sub-populations, including genetic, neuroendocrine, metabolic, and imaging markers and in particular parameters of the autonomic nervous system. The role of childhood trauma in determining these parameters emerged as an important factor.

He has more than 20 years of experience working with both small biotech and large pharmaceutical companies, including Amarin, Novartis, BMS, Axovant, Acorda Therapeutics, PTC Therapeutics, Sage Therapeutics, Aptinyx. He oversaw and was a key contributor to the development of compounds in psychiatric indications (major depression, schizophrenia, central pain disorders, cognitive dysfunction) and movement disorders (Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease). Dr. Murck has extensive experience in early- and late-stage clinical development and has a passion for translational research. He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters. He also holds a patent in the area of biomarker drives personalized treatment of major depression.
